Artist: Carla Slusher Sponsor: Century 21 Associated Professionals Carla Slusher lives on a ranch in southeastern New Mexico where she paints to country-and-western music. ''From the moment I heard about 'The Trail of Painted Ponies,' ideas for designs began to flow. At my studio on the ranch, I envisioned a horse wearing a cowboy hat, painted on jeans, and color-coordinated boots. A dancing horse ready for a night on the town. The bandana was added at the last moment for balance and color. Upon completion, I stepped back to take a look. At that moment, it so happened my favorite country station played a song by Brooks and Dunn. So I cranked up the volume, and Boot Scooter and I danced to 'The Boot Scootin' Boogie.''' This is how she came up with the name for her Pony, which has attitude with a capital A.

Artist: Roger Montoya Sponsor: Good Hands Gallery Hispanic artist Roger Montoya is a nationally recognized renaissance figure, as well known for his dance performances as he is for his landscape paintings. He served as Artistic Director of this Pony, assembling a team of some 50 people, ranging in age from 5 to 81, from a New Mexico village. First, they trooped out to local riverbeds and dumps that had not been used for twenty years to gather glass bottles and ceramic jugs. Under his direction, he materials were smashed, collected and applied to the surface of the Painted Pony, forming a kaleidoscopic mosaic surface that has to be seen to be believed. As if that were not enough, the original ''Caballo Brilliante'' rotates on a solar-powered turning device that captivates viewers with a reflective dance of color and light.

It was inspired by a poem Las Cruces artist Kathy Morrow wrote after the events of September 11, 2001: ''I will not forget those who sacrificed on the altar of freedom. Precious freedom, give me wings to soar beyond my dreams and touch the stars.'' As a child of the Southwest, the artist was raised on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation, where her father trained Indian police forces.
